THE SCIENCE OF SENZA
Terpenes
​
Terpenes are the the aromatic compounds that give all plants, such as cannabis, lavender and pine their characteristic scents and flavour. Cannabis, in particular, contains high concentrations of terpenes, with over 200 kinds documented to date. A small study conducted in 2018 showed that the smell of cannabis alone was enough to lower diastolic blood pressure significantly and change EEG brainwave frequencies towards a more relaxed state. Ongoing medical research is rapidly shedding light on the medicinal effects of plants we have used for generations, through elucidating the effects of terpenes on physical and emotional wellbeing. Beta-Caryophyllene
​
Many of the spices and herbs we use in everyday cooking, which humans have been using for millennia, contain cannabimimetic compounds. For example, Beta-caryophyllene, an ingredient in Senza, is also found in cloves and black pepper and works in the human body in a similar way to Cannabidiol (CBD) by partially stimulating the CB2 receptor. B-caryophyllene is a cannabimimetic compound and is also considered as a phytocannabinoid. Phytocannabionoids are naturally occurring plant molecules that have cannabinoid-like activity in the human body through stimulating CB1 or CB2 receptors or by enhancing endocannabinoid production. CBD has been shown to have significant calming effects, decreasing anxiety, helping with sleep and balancing mood. It can also assist with pain relief. We have found that Senza also confers some of these benefits.

The Endocannabinoid System
​
Our bodies produce endocannabinoids (EC), cannabinoid-like neurotransmitters that bind to cannabinoid receptors and make up the endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS is a complex system of receptors, neurotransmitters and endocrine pathways responsible for the regulation and balance of a myriad of bodily functions, from metabolism to memory, immunity, inflammation, mood and much more. Interestingly, Paracetamol, the world’s most ubiquitous pharmaceutical painkiller works via the endocannabinoid system and has been found to influence mood!

Olfactory Neurobiology
​
Our sense organs for smell, the olfactory bulbs, have thick neuronal projections that are wired directly to the amygdala, the centre of fear and arousal in the brain. The aroma of terpenes have proven neurological effects. For example, the smell of lavender, containing the terpene Linalool (an ingredient in SENZA), activates inhibitory pathways in our brains by stimulating the release of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, causing relaxation and decreased anxiety.
